Working mom, stay at home mom, work from home mom, it’s all about routines for us. I work from home as a freelance social media manager and I also am a marketing director for a small local business. I thrive on flexible but predictable routines and schedules.
I have a four year old son who is home with me full time (no school and no childcare), so we’ve had to get really good at nailing down a flexible schedule that sets our family up to succeed. No two days are exactly the same, but I try to provide my son and myself with predictability for each day so we’re never wondering…whats next? The beauty of having flexibility is that if one thing changes, our entire day isn’t completely thrown off.
Our typical day when I’m working from home:
Wake up and have breakfast – this is where I also sit and write my top priorities for the day
Get us both ready for the day
Structured morning time (I’ll go more into this below)
Morning movement activity
Cleanup / laundry, dishwasher, sweep/mop, etc.
Independent play while I either have phone calls, emails, start any mid morning work
Outside play, walk, park, library, or errands
Lunch
Table play (puzzles, coloring, playdoh, activities) my son can independently do
My husband is usually home mid afternoon so I try to save the bulk of my work for afternoons
Work until before I start cooking dinner
Dinner
Bath and bedtime
The great thing about this flexible schedule is that if we have plans, appointments, or things we want to go do, we totally can! I try and set myself up for success by making a top priorities list along with any appointments or commitments and planning my week around those.
Now I’ll share more about our structured morning time since I also do preschool with my son at home. I try and plan activities that offer my son connection along with education right after we do breakfast in the morning. That’s when he is most engaged, and when I have the brain capacity to really be fully present. These activities typically include reading books, fun workbook pages, engaging hands on crafts or projects, etc. I can definitely share more about our home preschool routine if anyone is interested.
I hope this helps, I know how overwhelming it can seem but If you are wanting to become a work from home mom while also having your little ones home with you, you can do it!
